Teeth Whitening

Diet, brushing and flossing are everyday ways of keeping your teeth and gums bright and healthy. However do you feel like they are not quite that perfect shade you desire? Here is some insight into the whitening treatment and questions frequently asked by many.

Why do teeth change colour?

Over time you may notice that your teeth may not be that shade they once were.

– Diet is a very big factor as to why teeth get stained. Coffee, tea, red wine and other liquids of darker shades contain colour pigments that attach to the enamel (outer layer) of the teeth.
– Smokers beware! Chemicals found in tobacco are known to create stubborn stains in teeth. Tar and nicotine are also responsible for yellowish stains on the surface of the teeth.
– As we age and over time, the enamel layer of the teeth diminishes and gets thinner from brushing gradually exposing the yellowish dentin layer beneath.
– Some medications are also known to be linked to tooth darkening. Antihistamines, antipsychotics and high blood pressure medications may cause discolouration throughout time.

So how does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening is a very simple in-chair process done by a qualified dentist usually in 1 or 2 visits of 1 hour each.  Whitening products that contain bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, work by breaking down stains on teeth enamel into smaller pieces, reducing the stain colour concentration and leaving the teeth brighter and whiter.

How often should I get my whitening done?

According to the dentist’s advice, it can be done every two years.

What are the side effects of teeth whitening?

Some people undergoing whitening treatments may experience sensitivity to the area worked on. This is caused by the peroxide of the whitening agent penetrating through the enamel and reaching the dentin within the tooth, irritating the nerve. This sensitivity is usually temporary when receiving whitening treatments.
